What is Dead or Alive?

Dead or Alive is a 3D fighting game created by Tomonobu Itagaki and developed by Team Ninja. Dead or Alive is consider sexualizing female characters and complex mechanics. Here is a brief history of how Dead or Alive is made from the ground up. Tomonobu Itagaki made a wager with the head of the company of Temco. Itagaki vowed to make a video game that would players would enjoy. He named the series Dead or Alive to demonstrate the series will fail or succeed. He made a group called Team Ninja to help Itagaki develop the game. The main inspirations for Dead or Alive was Virtua Fighter (which some characters appear in DOA5), Mortal Kombat and Fatal Fury (Mai also appear in DOA5). Known for fast gameplay and knocking opponents off multi-level stages.

Itagaki explain about DOA “I want people to remember DOA as a game that was very aggressive and combative. As to […] how it contributed to the fighting genre – I look at it as something similar to how sushi was released in this country and became mainstream”. Ryu Hayabusa, Moniji and Rachel crossover in Dead or Alive series. Kasumi and Ayame appear in the Ninja Gaiden franchise as well. DOA got spinoffs such as Volleyball and Xtreme. These games are majority female characters from the series no males.

Does Dead Or Alive have too much fanservice?

While on the topic of fanservice in Dead or Alive series. In-game, female characters (some) have assets that appeal to male females. I could name some female characters that males go crazy for. Tina Armstrong a hot southern wresting babe. Newest character Honoka which is remises of the character of Love Live! Nyotengu is playful princess of the tengu world and Helena Douglas a French CEO of DOATEC. Older games there is a jiggle physics from the female character later on was removed. Afterwards was implemented in Dead or Alive 5 Last Round as an option to turn off or on. Costumes plays a huge part in Dead or Alive. There is a lot of costumes for male and female characters.

Costumes ranging from cowgirl, Christmas, Halloweem, idols and many more, Koei Temco put out a lot of DLC costumes lately and people are somehow happy with it. There are some third-party costumes from anime and other video games. Costumes from Attack on Titans, Senran Kagura (some characters appear in those games), Guilty Gear and Keijo. I think Dead or Alive is not a fighting game anymore but eye-candy. Xtreme series has females character relaxing in bleach with various activities. There is pole-dancing, gravure, hip battle and many more. Dead or Alive Xtreme is an erotic fantasy game for male demographic. Although some characters don’t make it but it’s a good game to see your favorites. Is Dead or Alive a bad fighting game? Some may say yes but other no, it’s depends the player in general.

Sexuality in video game sells in Japan not American. In Dead or Alive having a romantic desire or waifu is somehow normal. If you want to support Koei Temco buy Dead or Alive 5 Last Round (Xbox One, Steam and PlayStation 4) and Xtreme 3 (PlayStation 4 and Vita).
