Castlevania 2017 – Dracula’s Wrath TV Series Overview

Let me say this “I am not a huge Castlevania fan but the series is cunning”. Based on the hit Konami Castlevania, Netflix brings a 4 episode animated series. Directed by Sam Deats, This series is influenced by Japanese anime and the story is based on the 1989 Castlevania III: Dracula’s Curse. During the development of the show, in 2007 Frederator Studios acquired the rights to produce an animated film adaption of Castlevania III: Dracula’s Curse. Writer Warren Ellis was hired by Frederator but Ells stated “I no previous knowledge of the series”. Ellis has work with Castlevania producer Koji Igarashi to find a storyline that fit into the timeline of the film. Ellis was frustrated that Igarashi want eight rewrites of pre-production material before giving approval. Frederator’s Kevin Kolde don’t want the film to be aimed for children which allow Ellis to use gruesome scenes to tell a story. The film was anticpated to be only 80 minutes but Ellis know would don’t be enough to tell the full story. In 2008, Ellis completed the script on the show’s production blog during the development hell. Power Animation Studios’s Sam Deats was able to reach a deal with Netflix for the production. Powerhouse reached out Frederator to help with the production using existing scripts years ago and with changes fit the format.

The plot of the series is about Count Vlad Dracula Tepes’s wife is burned due to falsely accused of witchcraft. Now Dracula is declaring all the people lives in Wallachia and have a thirst of vengeance for the death of his lover Emily Swallow. Dracula sends of army of monster to hunt people. Now Demon hunter Trevor Belmont from an exiled clan, Speaker Sypha Belnades and Dracula’s son Alucard will take arms and stand up to Dracula. Before I get to the characters and animation, I will tell about the Castlevania series in general for newcomers. Castlevania is a horror action-adventure game developed by Komani and also called Metrodivania due to similarity to Super Metroid. The story of the series is a family of vampire hunter named the Belmont clan that fights supernatural entities such as werewolves, undead zombies and many more. The key characters appeared in this series is the same in Castlevania III: Dracula’s Curse such as Trevor Belmont (voiced by Richard Armitage), Alucard (voiced by James Callis), Spyha Belnades (voiced by Alejandra Reynoso) and Vlad Dracula Tepes (voiced by Graham McTavish). Trevor Belmont comes across as a protagonist that doesn’t have a care in the world but when people are in danger, the care slowly matures and he starts becoming a hero. Dracula appeared to a lonely man who hated human but when Emily show him the world and not all thing about bad. Dracula learn how to love and willing to protect Emily from anything. Sypha and Alcuard are side characters who want to put an end to Alucard reign. The animation is very dark and gritty with the art style of Ayami Kojima (Castlevania: Symphony of the Night). For a person who have not played Castlevania in a while I like the series and writing. There is heavy use of religion in this series and it’s getting renewed for a second season. If you are a Castlevania fan make sure to watch it on Netflix.
